From corporate 9 to 5 to running my own thing
I started on the traditional path: 9 to 5 corporate America at Meredith Corporation, running paid media for People, Better Homes & Gardens, and the rest of their titles. Big brands, big budgets, and I am genuinely grateful for it. It got my foot in the door.
It also taught me something I could not unsee. The system rewards busyness over actual production. I did not want to spend 40 years looking busy for 20 hours a week while I did the real work in the other 20. So a couple of months in, I started a blog on the side and taught myself SEO, affiliate, and email marketing. Trial and error, spinning up WordPress sites, seeing what stuck.
Then I got my first client and said screw it. That was 2019, and I have worked for myself ever since. Somewhere along the way the question stopped being whether to hire and became whether to build systems instead. I keep choosing systems, because the moment you scale by adding people, quality slips, and my name is on the work.
That is the whole reason this site exists. Everything I publish about AI is something I built because I needed it to hold up a real business, not because it made a good video.
What I actually do
- AI search visibility (AEO): Getting clients cited and ranked inside AI Overviews and AI search, not just the blue links that are disappearing. This is the work I am most confident in right now.
- Commercial SEO: Comparisons, alternatives, and service pages aimed at mid and bottom of funnel buyers. I have largely stopped chasing top of funnel informational keywords, because AI search is eating that traffic.
- Websites built on a modern stack: Claude Code, GitHub, Cloudflare, and Astro instead of WordPress themes and page builders. Faster to build, faster to load, and I own every line of it.
- AI systems and automations: The Claude Code skills, cron jobs, and content pipelines that let one person run a full marketing operation. I package the same ones I use into the Skills Stack.
- Local SEO: Google Business Profile, reviews, citations, and location pages for local service businesses that most agencies overlook.

Subject matter expertise matters more now, not less
You cannot tell Claude to do your SEO if you have no idea what moves the needle. People outsource thinking to AI when they do not know what a good hook or a good output even looks like. The decade of marketing is what makes the AI useful. Without it you just get confident nonsense, faster.
Most AI content is hype grifting
I would argue 99% of content telling you how to make money with AI is theory from people who have never done the work. If I had no ethics I would make a fear-bait video for every model release and funnel people into a course. Knowing how to build a landing page is 100x more useful than reacting to a version number.
Systems beat headcount
I could scale the traditional way and hire more people, but quality diminishes and my name is on it. So I build systems instead. A 6 figure agency running on one person is the whole argument, and it is testable.
Stop chasing model releases
The models are already good enough for almost any knowledge work task. The question is not which one to use. It is whether your systems are built so it does not matter which one you plug in. Most people are asking the wrong question.
